American Girl and Australian Girl Comparison

Posted on their own, you don't get the full impression of just how different American Girl and Australian Girl dolls are.

For the comparison I picked my red-headed AG Sienna (Saige) - my surprise birthday gift sent to me by my son a few years ago.  She looks positively petite next to Matilda

Matilda has a vinyl upper body which is better for sleeveless dresses.  She also has a lot of posing ability with her head which both turns and tilts.

Her toes have little gaps between them so she can wear jandals/flip-flops/thongs - whatever they are called where ever you may be.

It was difficult to show just how much bigger Matilda's feet are to Sienna's.

The Australian girls toes are more shaped/formed as well.

The both have cute little knees!

Comparing sizes with Sasha (Everlee)  and my largest Schoenhut Miss Dolly, Anne-Marie.

You can see just how well the proportions of a Sasha doll are when comparing with the other dolls.

  1. Thank you for the comparison - I tend to forget that the American girl doll is only 18 inches tall because we don't have one while we have the 19.5 inch Gotz and the 19.5 inch Aussie girl doll. We like the Aussie girl a lot but her proportions are a downside - her arms are too long which means that photographing her at certain angles can make her look a bit top heavy. Sasha Morgenthaler definitely knew what she was doing when she designed Sasha - as a genuine article well familiar with drawing and scuplting the human body she understood proportion better than the artists of the modern American Girl and Aussie Girl dolls and wasn't willing to compromise on production quality for her all vinyl doll. One of the things which has always put me off about getting a full sized American Girl doll is the wide shoulders and the cloth body with the awkward arrangement for the neck which doesn't allow for the head to tilt. The modern Gotz 19.5 inch body is much more naturally proportioned (designed by an artist).

    1. It is interesting as I agree totally with you on your points on the Gotz doll, and yet when it came between choosing whether to keep my AG or the Gotz, the AG won! I am not sure quite what it is, but I remember when I first saw pictures of AG, I wasn't at all convinced
but when I saw one 'in person' I really liked them and of course the 'one doll' to knit for became more.

For all of the Australian Girl appearing top heavy, she actually stands really well and steady which also surprised me.

Sasha of course got it completely right.

  2. Of course I'm horribly biased, but I think Sasha's proportions are absolutely perfect. Having said that, I do think that Ann-Marie's long and willowy proportions are very beautiful.

    1. I have to agree with you Steve, which is why the Sasha dolls make such perfect models for stories etc...as they can look so real. People have often been surprised at their size when they have seen them in person for the first time as well.

I think Schoenhut proportions are done well too though, which again is why they often work so well in stories.

  4. Good doll sixe comparisons for those who have these dolls as well as the Sashas.

    1. It was interesting to do as I have never really had Matilda the Australian Girl out with any of the others before. I never realised just how much bigger she was.
